The internet has been a boon for many, providing access to a world of information and opportunity. However, as with anything, there are always those who seek to abuse its power. In recent years, we have seen a rise in the use of internet calling apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Skype for nefarious purposes.

Now, it looks like the Indian government is taking steps to crack down on these activities. According to a draft bill that has been circulating, internet calling apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Skype may soon need to obtain a telecom license in order to operate in India.

The bill proposes to include Over-The-Top (OTT) applications as part of the definition of ‘telecommunications service’. This would require companies such as WhatsApp, Skype, and Zoom to get a telecom license in order to continue operating in India. The bill also proposes to establish a digital communications commission, which will be the regulatory authority for the telecom sector.

This move would be a big setback for Internet companies such as Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, and even Apple, which offer Internet-based voice calling using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).  It would also be a major inconvenience for users who have grown accustomed to using these apps to communicate with friends and family overseas.

In explanation, the government has said that the move is necessary to ensure the safety and security of users, but critics argue that it is a way of exerting control over the online space.

It remains to be seen whether the bill will be passed into law, but it is clear that the government is taking a tough stance on the regulation of online communications. Also, this process is being closely watched by other countries and the European Union, as it could set a precedent for other countries to follow.

So, what do you think? Should internet calling apps are required to obtain a telecom license in order to operate? Let us know in the comments!
